More attacks in emergency rooms throughout Italy

The wave of assaults in emergency wards throughout Italy does not stop.

In July alone, the following were attacked doctors and health personnel in Jesolo, Catania and Cinisello Balsamo where in the latter case a real punitive raid was organised by two Moroccans against four nurses.

The intention of the Fials union is to demand more security for hospital staff 'with the presence of a security guard to prevent such incidents during night shifts'.

Data from the report

Assaults on medical staff are an emergency in Italian emergency rooms (EDs): from 1 March to 30 April 2017, at least one physical assault occurred in 2 out of 3 EDs (63%).

This emerges from a survey by the Italian Society of Emergency Medicine (Simeu) on a sample of 218 PS, equal to 33% of those present in Italy (667). In 2018, says Simeu, the situation has 'significantly worsened in all regions'. In 50% of cases, the attacks occurred where overcrowding is most severe.

In the next few days I will ask for a meeting with the Security and Welfare councillors to study solutions that can protect all workersparticularly those working rotating shifts, day and night.

In hospitals the right to health of patients equals the right to respect and safety of the people who work there. What happened at the Bassini hospital in Cinisello Balsamo must never happen again in any hospital,' said Lega Nord regional councillor Riccardo Pase, who spoke on the matter.
