Initial situation
An establishment belonging to one of the main Italian leaders in the steel and mining sector, specialising in the production of specific materials for automotive engines, employs 200 workers facing risks from toxic and flammable gases. To produce these components, the company uses hydrogen furnaces to braze steel in a controlled atmosphere. Since the’hydrogen (H₂) is extremely flammable and replaces the’oxygen (O₂), workers must carefully monitor gas levels. The site also uses the nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), an extremely toxic gas.
The presence of these gases in the environment implies compliance with very strict regulations, which require workers to closely monitor gas levels to ensure their own safety and that of the entire building. However, due to various issues related to the maintenance and repair of the personal multi-gas detectors used, this activity was time-consuming and sometimes malfunctions recurred in the short term.
Solution
