Introduction and initial situation
L'ASST Niguarda Metropolitan Hospitalis a historic hospital institute that was established and opened in 1939. The name derives from the administrative connection with the Ospedale Maggiore Ca' Grande, the oldest hospital in Milan which had been undergoing logistical and organisational renovation for years. The latter was moved to the Niguarda area north of Milan to meet the need to give the city a hospital in an expanding and easily accessible area.
The Milan hospital was looking for a nurse call system that it was quick, simple, convenient and reliable.
Since the institute consists of very large areas where operators are constantly on the move, the request was to have mobile alarms that would guarantee interventions quick, timely e intelligent.

Which solution represented the best alternative e more suitable in this particular case?
The solution adopted was a system Ascom pager, consisting of the following devices:
- Omnidirectional pole antenna
- U952t transmitter
- U914d receivers

That of the pagers, contrary to what one might think, is not an outdated technology. In this particular situation, the most suitable choice compared to solutions DECT or WI-FI given the large size of the structure. In addition, a power of only 5W with a single antenna on the roof of the structure guarantees coverage of the entire bottom (the entire perimeter of the structure).
In healthcare, in everyday life, the operators move a lot between departmentsMoreover, as the Niguarda hospital building is very old (with very thick walls and columns), it was difficult to plan a new wired network infrastructure. For this further reason, the infrastructure light consisting of Ascom pagers and based on the transmitter-antenna system, once again proves to be the ideal solution for the institute.
Advantages of Ascom pagers
There are numerous advantages of pagers Ascom for the nurse call that led Niguarda Hospital in Milan to choose them. Just to name a few:
- Lightness of the systempresence of a single antenna throughout the facility and a transmitter that sends messages to the operators' paging receivers
- Low maintenance required
- Guaranteed high reliability and near-zero probability of failure
- Long battery life and low power consumptiona stylus battery that can last up to a few months
- Simplicity and convenience: a small visor on which to display the message and a single button to take over the alarm call
- Efficiency (turns alarm notifications into timely responses and interventions) and robustness (shock resistant)
- VersatilityIn addition to nurse call messages and alarms, pagers can also be used for service communications of all kinds for healthcare workers
